Portrait of an Eagle Superstars

A collage of images Cumberland Valley's Portrait of an Eagle coin celebration for employees.

Earlier this week, we continued recognizing staff members who exemplify the Portrait of an Eagle competencies. Throughout the day, Superintendent Dr. Blanchard surprised them by presenting certificates and POE Challenge Coins to celebrate their dedication to their students and their efforts in promoting our core competencies.

Please help us celebrate the following staff members:

- Diane Giardina, Principal's Secretary at CV9, was recognized for her incredible adaptability, always adjusting to the ever-changing needs of her team with ease. Whether it's guiding staff through HQ requirements or helping them meet deadlines, she does it all with a smile and a positive attitude. Her patience and support make her an invaluable asset to the team! Diane's genuine care for others shines through in every interaction, making everyone feel seen, supported, and empowered to succeed.

- Danielle Goodling, Physical Education Teacher at Monroe Elementary, was recognized for her incredible adaptability, effortlessly adjusting to whatever her classroom—sometimes an auditorium, sometimes a cafeteria—demands. Whether it's half a room, outdoors, or any other space, she ensures students always have a top-notch physical education experience. Through it all, she maintains a positive attitude and handles everything with grace!

- Anna Horst, Secretary at the District Support Facility, was recognized for her outstanding problem-solving abilities. Anna is the go-to person who always finds a way to make things happen. Whether it's securing supplies or tackling unexpected challenges, she’s the driving force that ensures everything runs smoothly. Her quick thinking and resourcefulness keep the department moving forward, no matter what comes up!

- Jodi Reinard, School Nurse at Monroe Elementary, was recognized for her deep empathy, always putting the well-being of our students first with a caring touch. As the school nurse, she goes above and beyond to comfort, listen, and help every student feel heard and supported. Her warmth and kindness make her a pillar of support in the school, ensuring everyone feels cared for and safe. Her genuine concern for each student's well-being leaves a lasting, positive impact on everyone she meets.

- Tracy Wansor, Custodian Supervisor at the District Support Facility, was recognized for his flexibility and dedication. Tracy has consistently gone above and beyond to meet the district’s custodial needs. With 31 years of service, he brings a wealth of experience, adapting seamlessly to any challenge that comes his way. Whether it’s managing day-to-day operations or handling the complexities of construction at GR and EV, Tracy's leadership shines through.

Congratulations, and thank you for your commitment to Cumberland Valley!

Mapping Their Way to D.C.

CVHS Computer Science students pose with Representative Perry, showcasing their app, Map Eye.

Earlier this year, we shared the exciting news that Cumberland Valley High School students—Maximus Knickerbocker, Aaron Widjaja, Sricharan Addagatla, and Prisha Kanikaram—were named winners of the 2024 Congressional App Challenge for PA’s 10th District, marking our 8th consecutive win! (Pictured left to right with Rep. Perry at center.)

Their app, Map Eye, helps students and visitors navigate the school’s layout with real-time indoor directions. This spring, the team traveled to Washington, D.C. for the national House of Code event, where they showcased their app to members of Congress, met other winners from across the country, toured the Capitol building, and had a private meeting with Rep. Scott Perry.

We are incredibly #CVProud of their innovation and dedication—congratulations, Eagles!

A Legacy of Leadership

We’re excited to share some amazing news from this past weekend’s PA TSA State Conference! Our very own Jason Kofmehl, CV TSA Advisor and high school Technology & Engineering teacher, was honored with the prestigious Dr. Thomas R. Winters Award — a rare distinction that is not given out every year, but only when someone’s contributions truly stand out.

This award recognizes exceptional dedication, talent, and tireless effort in making the CV TSA team the outstanding group it is today. We’re incredibly proud of his lasting impact and leadership.

Congratulations, Mr. Kofmehl, on this well-earned recognition!

Eagles Around the District

CV showcases what our students are doing across the district recently.

Top left: The Hampden Elementary Green Team gives our 4th and 5th graders the chance to become eco-heroes—one recycled bottle and compost pile at a time! From planting a school garden to learning how to reduce waste, students are getting their hands dirty in the best way possible. We were especially excited to welcome back retired teacher Mr. John Silfee, who returned for a special session to share his green wisdom!

Top center: Mountain View’s 6th graders recently journeyed through the book A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park in geography class—and they didn’t stop at just reading! Since 2019, when students raised enough to drill their very first well in honor of Good Hope, this annual tradition has continued to grow. Just a few months ago, their efforts funded a second well in Mountain View’s name—proof that empathy, action, and a good book can go a long way!

Top right: First graders in Mrs. Jurcik’s class at Middlesex Elementary put their big hearts into action by creating books all about empathy—one of our Portrait of an Eagle competencies! They proudly shared their stories (and a few wise words) with Mrs. Hess’ kindergarten class, spreading kindness one page at a time. It was a sweet moment of learning and connection between some of our youngest Eagles!

Bottom left: Students in Ms. Mastrella’s class at Eagle View Middle School absolutely crushed their Science Seminar! With confidence, collaboration, and critical thinking on full display, they tackled big ideas and dove into meaningful discussions. The seminar was a great example of students bringing learning to life through curiosity and conversation!

Bottom center: CVHS senior Krish Lochan recently brought home a major honor—he was named one of just two recipients in the state to earn the 2025 PA TSA Laura Hummell Outstanding Technology Award! This prestigious recognition celebrates Krish’s outstanding scholastic achievements, leadership abilities, and deep involvement in the Technology Student Association (TSA). The award highlights his excellence in technology and engineering, as well as his dedication to the TSA mission, which includes submitting a detailed application and earning glowing recommendations from educators. Congrats, Krish!

Bottom right: Silver Spring 3rd graders had a soaring good time at their Kite Assembly, getting ready to launch into their "Up, Up & Away" project! Mr. Todd Little, a world-traveling kite enthusiast and expert kite maker, shared his flying adventures and even more exciting kite tales. The students couldn’t wait to start creating their own kites and learn the ropes of this high-flying hobby!

Mission Accomplished

Our unstoppable Raider team took over the JROTC League 3 Championship this weekend, dominating all 5 events—a rare and epic sweep we haven’t seen in years!

They triumphed over the fierce competition of eight other teams, proving their strength and skill across the board.

Events conquered:

  • Army Physical Fitness Test

  • One-Rope Bridge

  • First Aid

  • Land Navigation

  • 3KM Team Run (in full kit!)

A huge shoutout to Tori Freeland and Alex Freeland, who earned the Ironman & Ironwoman titles for crushing the APFT among 100+ cadets!

Leading the charge: Captains CJ Dunlap, Tori Freeland, and Gavin Reinfeld—amazing leadership all the way through.

Way to go, Eagles! We are #CVProud of you!

A Formula for Victory

CVHS Science Olympiad team, high school and middle school combined, competes at the State level.

On Saturday, April 26, 2025, our Science Olympiad teams competed in the Pennsylvania State Tournament at Penn State Altoona. The top two teams in each division advanced to the National Science Olympiad Tournament.

In the high school division, Cumberland Valley placed second overall out of 36 teams, earning a spot at the National Tournament, which will take place on May 24 at the University of Nebraska. This marks CV’s third national qualification in the past four years—a remarkable achievement!

In the middle school division, Eagle View placed third overall among 36 teams and earned first place in five events—a new school record for EVMS! Mountain View also delivered a strong performance, finishing 8th overall.

CV transportation department update

From Our Transportation Department

Like many other schools locally and nationally, we are experiencing a significant shortage of school bus and van drivers at Cumberland Valley School District. This shortage has affected, and will continue to affect, the transportation services we provide to our students. Our contractors are actively working to hire new drivers, and we are committed to ensuring that all students receive a ride to and from school. However, please be aware that this may require last-minute modifications to routes and stop times, which we will communicate to parents as quickly as possible.

Notifications of delays will be sent via text and email to the contact information listed in Skyward. To ensure you receive these notifications, please verify that your phone numbers and email addresses are up to date in Skyward.

When we have information about delays exceeding 20 minutes, we will notify you as soon as possible. Please understand that our Transportation Office is often overwhelmed with calls and may not be able to answer all inquiries immediately. We kindly ask that phone calls be reserved for emergencies, such as a missing child. For non-urgent matters, please email us at transportation@cvschools.org.

If you know anyone interested in becoming a school bus or van driver for Cumberland Valley School District, please encourage them to reach out to one of our Transportation Contractors. There are great part-time opportunities available!
