This spring, Eagle View and Mountain View Middle Schools continued with their intramural Unified Bocce programs, bringing students of all abilities together for a season of teamwork, sportsmanship, and fun. Through Special Olympics Unified Sports®, students with and without intellectual disabilities practiced and competed as equal teammates, building friendships and promoting inclusion. Jon Sauve and Taryn Hennessey coached EV’s teams, while Brianna Doherty led the MV squad. Several teachers and educational assistants from both schools played an active role in supporting the program.
The season wrapped up with a joyful after-school competition at MV, where families came out to cheer on the athletes in a heartwarming celebration of unity and community. We are incredibly #CVProud of all of the students, staff, and supporters who helped make this program such a success.
CVHS 11th graders recently participated in the Junior Achievement REAL Life Summit, a day-long event designed to equip students with essential financial literacy and career readiness skills. The day was divided into engaging, hands-on modules that gave students a real taste of life after high school. In the Budget Builder activity, students took on unique life scenarios and faced real-world financial challenges, learning the importance of budgeting, savings, and making informed decisions. The Who Am I? game introduced them to various career paths, while Interviewing Tips, played through a Jenga challenge, taught essential interview skills in a fun and interactive way. Additional activities like REAL Life #Adulting and Is The Price Right? helped students gain practical knowledge about independent living and understanding everyday costs.
A huge thank you goes out to the volunteers who generously shared their time and expertise, making this event possible. Their support helped provide our students with a hands-on, eye-opening experience that will serve them as they transition into adulthood.
Top left: Aboody, a kindergartener at Sporting Hill Elementary School, reached new heights during his third climbing session in his Physical Education class. Using an adaptive climbing system provided by Mike DeCavalcante and the Above Limits Organization, he was able to climb twice, reaching a total of 50 feet, right alongside his peers. With a big smile and plenty of encouragement, Aboody showed that with the right support, everybody can climb.
Top center: During Teacher Appreciation Week last week, all CV9 staff members were pleasantly surprised with gift cards, thanks to the generous donations from the Eagle Foundation and CV9 parents. We truly appreciate the community’s support in celebrating our dedicated educators!
Top right: Hampden Elementary School kicked off their very first Wellness Day on Friday, May 9th, and the students couldn’t have been more excited! Throughout the day, they explored fun stations like fitness, martial arts, yoga, and even animal therapy, learning that wellness is about more than just eating right and exercising—it’s about taking care of the body, mind, and spirit. With so many activities to enjoy, the day was a perfect reminder that being healthy is all about balance!
Bottom left: Shaull Elementary School 4th graders put their heads together during indoor recess to brainstorm ideas for their Portrait of an Eagle competency video. With a focus on the seven key competencies—adaptability, confidence, communication, critical thinking, problem solving, responsibility, and empathy—they came up with creative ways to showcase each one.
Bottom center: A big congratulations to Middlesex Elementary School's Girls on the Run team for completing the 5K at HACC this past weekend! After weeks of training and plenty of support from their incredible coaches, every runner crossed the finish line with big smiles and even bigger accomplishments. What an inspiring way to show that hard work and teamwork really do pay off!
Bottom right: Last week, Eagle View Middle School students put on an impressive Spring Chorus concert. Their hard work and talent were on full display as they filled the room with beautiful music. It was a wonderful way to wrap up the year and showcase the students' dedication and passion for music.
Cumberland Valley School District continues to receive recognition for its exceptional implementation of structured literacy practices grounded in the science of reading. As part of this ongoing recognition, on Friday, May 9, 2025, our district welcomed members of the Pennsylvania legislature, including Representative Justin Fleming, a co-sponsor of House Bill 684, which aims to strengthen structured literacy practices across the state. During their visit to Winding Creek Elementary School, guests observed high-quality reading instruction delivered by our dedicated and skilled staff.
Our district has served as a model for the Commonwealth throughout our six-year journey to implement evidence-based literacy practices and provide meaningful professional development.
More information about Cumberland Valley’s approach to elementary literacy can be found here.
Cumberland Valley High School’s LifeSmarts team proudly represented Pennsylvania at the 2025 National LifeSmarts Championship in Chicago, earning an impressive 4th place finish among 46 teams from across the country. This marks the fourth time CV’s team has advanced to the national level, once again showcasing the strength of our students on a national stage.
LifeSmarts, a program of the National Consumers League, challenges students on real-world topics including personal finance, health and safety, technology, consumer rights, and environmental issues. Competing as state champions, the CV team demonstrated exceptional knowledge, teamwork, and critical thinking throughout the multi-day event. We’re extremely #CVProud of their outstanding achievement and continued excellence.
