Principal's Message

Greetings Shaull Families,

This is a very busy and exciting time of the school year! The PSSAs are about to begin, Teacher Appreciation Week is nearing, and we have a Spring mindset shift into the final trimester of the school year which includes our annual Field Day and May Fair!

Within the next week, an individual seesaw message will be sent out with information about the May Fair including sign up opportunities for any interested volunteers. The May Fair will be here at Shaull on Friday, May 16th from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM with raffles beginning at 8:00 PM.

Please see the Field Day section below for information provided by our PE Teacher, Mr. Condran, regarding our upcoming Field Day on Friday, May 9th. Information included a comprehensive schedule and volunteer sign ups. Please note Kindergarten's Field Day is on April 30th. Mr. C. has done a fabulous job creating a fun, engaging, and inclusive experience for all students!

Our PTO has been working hard planning a "First Class" Teacher Appreciation Week! See the message below about how you can provide some "Air Mail" for our Shaull Staff!

Air Mail Link

This year, there is an Airplane Theme for Staff and Teacher Appreciation Week. Please submit "U.S. Air Mail" or any kind messages or notes of thanks and appreciation to Shaull staff, so we can share it during that week!

U.S. Air Mail messages will be printed and hung in a visible spot in the lobby for all to see! Messages may be addressed to a specific special someone, or to all staff in general.

Please remember any staff in the building, including cafeteria and maintenance staff, classroom aides, specials teachers - anyone whose day would be made with a few kind words.

U.S. Air Mail may be from students and/or parents, and may contain a note of any kind, such as recognition for something "above and beyond" that they did, or simply being wonderful day in and day out, all year long! U.S. Air Mail may be signed with your name, or can be an anonymous message of kindness.

Submit as many as you like!

Thank you,

Mr. T. and the Shaull PTO

Congratulations to Mrs. Schade!

Last week at the CV Eagle Foundation Dinner, Our Music Teacher, Mrs. Schade, was recognized as our Shaull Commitment to Excellence Star for the 2024-2025 school year!

PSSA Information for Grades 3, 4, and 5

The Pennsylvania State Board of Education requires that all public school students participate in the annual Pennsylvania System of School Assessments (PSSA). Included with this letter (links below) is specific information that addresses questions you might have about the PSSA testing program. Please read this information carefully. If you would like additional information about the assessments, please contact Mr. T. at Shaull Elementary.

Elementary students will be tested on the following dates:

3rd – 5th Grade English Language Arts:

April 22 - 24

3rd – 5th Grade Math:

April 28 - 29

5th Grade Science:

April 30 - May 1

Cumberland Valley takes a great deal of pride in the PSSA performance of our students. Please discuss the importance of these assessments with your student(s) and encourage their best effort. If possible, please refrain from scheduling appointments during the testing period. Thank you for your cooperation and support!

Note: Please do not schedule Educational Trips during testing windows. Per district policy, these trips may not be approved as excused absences.

PDE Electronic Devices and Q/A for Parents: PDE Electronic Device Info and Q/A for Parents

IMPORTANT Information for 5th Grade Parents/Guardians:

Due to the 5th Grade Science PSSA being administered online this year, students in grade 5 will keep their devices at school with chargers from April 14 through May 1st. This will ensure that all students will have their devices at school and charged for each day's test session.

*Next year, all PSSAs will be administered online.

PSSA Tips

PSSA Advice for Families:

  • Ensure your student receives a good night's sleep each night

  • Have your child eat a healthy and nutritious breakfast so they are ready for their assessment. Each assessment section will be taken in the mornings, soon after arrival, announcements, and morning meetings.

  • Reduce stress in the mornings by following a schedule and packing lunches the night before.

  • Please have your student to school on time

  • Encourage your student to do their best

  • Remind your student that the PSSA will not affect their grades.

  • Encourage your child to wear comfortable clothing to school

We will remind students of the following:

  • Take your time. Check your answers and show your work.

  • Read questions carefully, and feel free to take notes as you read

  • Be sure to answer every question

  • Proofread your writing to see if it makes sense

  • Relax and do your best

A word about Electronic Devices:

Finally, the Pennsylvania Department of Education has a cell phone policy that restricts most electronic devices from testing sites (phones, ipads, chromebooks, smart watches). PDE requires a strict policy on cell phones and electronics in order to ensure the security of test materials. In our district, students are not permitted to have cell phones or electronic devices during test sessions, and they are not allowed in testing rooms. We strongly encourage students to leave their cell phones or electronic devices at home on testing days. If students do bring cell phones and electronic devices to school, please encourage them to comply with test administrator (proctor) requests to collect the items until the assessment is completed.

Fifth Grade Transition to Middle School Information

Please see the information below from MVMS Principal, Mr. Hosenfeld.

MVMS Orientation Information:

5th Grade Parents/Guardians:

On Thursday, May 1, Mountain View Middle School will host our Middle School Orientation Night for Parents in the MV Auditorium. The presentation will begin at 6:30pm. This presentation is primarily focused on helping parents understand the transition to middle school and equipping them with information to help support their students. Students will be receiving information about the transition to middle school through various other methods, so they really don’t need to attend this event (but are welcome if needed). The presentation will last about an hour and will highlight some of the biggest differences that Middle School brings, including scheduling, grading, school policies, and student opportunities and supports. We will have time to answer questions as well. A copy of the presentation slide deck will also be posted to our website later that evening. We hope to see you at this event and look forward to helping make the transition to Middle School successful for every child.

Please see the information below from the CVSD K-12 Math Department Supervisor, Mrs. Knerr.

MS Math Placement Testing Information:

To 5th Grade Families,

As we approach the end of the year, it is time to begin thinking of your child’s placement into the appropriate math class for next year. Next year’s 6th grade students will have two options for placement in math. The 6th grade classes will be as follows:

Math 6 – Students are at grade level and move at a normal pace.

Math 7 – Students skip 1 grade level in math (formally known as Pre-Algebra).

In order to have students who are properly placed, we will be testing students on their readiness for 6th grade math or higher for next year. Since all of our current tests only assess students on their knowledge of 5th grade material, we needed to find the proper tests to discover their aptitude for higher level math. The test that will be administered will be a form of a 6th grade final exam. This will be administered to all 5th grade students. Proficiency on this test along with other data will help determine if your child will be placed in Math 6 or Math 7. Our rationale for administering this test to all of the students is that we want to give everyone the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities in math. This test will be given to your child on May 13 or May 14, 2025.

The following data will be used for placement: 4th grade PSSAs, 5th grade PSSAs (once available), Spring aMath score, Spring CPM Math Automaticity score, PVAAS projections, and score on 6th grade final exam. Once the data is analyzed, emails will be sent to the families of students who are recommended for Math 7. If you do not receive an email by the end of June, contact Ms. Stacey Knerr (sknerr@cvschools.org) with questions.

It is very important that we test their readiness so students are not misplaced and become frustrated with math. We feel that all of our courses at the middle school are rigorous, and the elementary math program has helped prepare your child to experience success next year in 6th grade.

All students are recommended to complete a summer assignment prior to the start of the new school year. All summer assignments are located on the district webpage. Be sure that your student completes the appropriate assignment based upon their placement. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Sincerely,

Ms. Stacey Knerr K-12 Math Department Supervisor
